Learning target/expertise:

In this course, the students are taught foundational knowledge about interactive simulations. In particular, in-depth apprehension of methods in the fields of modelling & simulation, representation, numerical methods and computer graphics will empower the student to evaluate and to contribute to the design and the programmatic implementation of interactive simulations.


The basic concept of modelling & simulation is extended by the notion of user interactions. Differences and common features among several academic and industrial examples will be stressed in order to develop a generalised terminology and methodology for interactive simulations.

Interactivity translates into one or several users influencing the model and the simulation process, respectively; accordingly, the course revolves around the changes to the simulation model and the emerging dynamics in respect to the computational processes that result from the introduction of user interactions.

Interactivity in simulations necessitates the development and the utilisation of real-time rendering techniques (computer graphics), intense efforts towards optimisation, and a clear understanding of acceptable numerical errors due to systematic approximations. In this course, we shed light on the state-of-the-art and discuss current challenges and their potential solutions, for instance in regard to simulation histories or dynamic abstraction.
