Deciding When To React To Incremental User Input In Human-Robot Interaction

Workshop "Timing in Human-Robot Interaction" at the 9th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI 2104)

This position paper describes the concept of using an influence diagram to manage timing in human-robot interaction. Dialogue applications based on natural modalities - such as speech or gesture input - are faced with various uncertainties about the user's cognitive state and the potential result of the robot's actions. Influence diagrams can be used to reason about the expected utility of these actions given partial or noisy observations of the world state.
