As computers interact more and more in a human like way, the ability to engage in Small Talk becomes more and more important. In our work we focus on culture-specific aspects of Small Talk in order to simulate believable dialogs. Our findings are based on a video corpus that was recorded in Germany and Japan as well as on findings described in the literature. To this end the choice of topics in Small Talk was analysed and integrated into a demonstrator using virtual agents. In a preliminary study we tested its impact on German subjects. Our overall objective is to build a multiagent system that generates culture - specific Small Talk behaviour, which poses a great challenge to dialog systems.
