Research Interests

I have already been involved in the SAVE ORCA project during my time as a research assistant. This emphasis on Organic Computing and self-x systems has been substantiated in my diploma thesis that dealt with the efficiency of self-organising systems. Since October 1st, 2009 I am coordinating the DFG research unit OC-Trust.

My main interests and some of the questions associated with them are:

  • Self-Organisation and Emergence: How do these two concepts relate? Which paradigms yield self-organisation? How can emergent behaviour be predicted and influenced within a system?
  • Multi-Agent Systems: How can multi-agent systems support self-organising systems? Which communication structures assist self-organising systems?
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: How can planning and learning influence the performance of self-organising systems? Which learning mechanism can be employed on which data to improve performance of a self-x system?
  • Software Engineering: In how far can self-organising systems be engineered? How can the inherently unpredictable behaviour of a self-organising system be incorporated in the engineering process?
