Abstract: This contribution focuses on fundamental principles of preference handling in database systems. A suitable and efficient support of preferences in databases is considered as a key to building advanced personalized search engines and to pro-viding better support for e-commerce applications. Of course, many database re-searchers have made significant contributions in this respect. But for the purpose here we will restrict ourselves to research results that have been made during the past decade at the chair of databases and information systems at the University of Augsburg.
